Blow dryers allow greater control over the structure and form of hair, by regulating and manipulating the generation of temporary molecular bonds in each hair strand. The hair is exposed to a blow dryer for a specific period of time - typically from half a second to four seconds. This period is termed the heat pulse. Prior to the heat pulse, the hair is wet with water and is either slightly damp or completely dry.

This is because the diffuser directs the heat down to the ends where it most effectively melts and raises the curl. There are two types of hair dryer that are commonly used today - the hand held blow dryers and the electric blow dryers.
