By using a blow dryer, it is possible to make short hair appear longer and healthier by sealing the cuticle shut and making hair more resistant to split ends. Blow dryers help to manage the volume of the hair and give a smoother appearance to the hair shaft. Blow dryers have two basic types, namely the static and the rotary variety. The rotary hair dryer is the most common type found in homes and offices. Most modern hair dryers include a Safety Switch that is used to prevent the unit from being turned on accidentally. However, some older types may still include such a safety switch. In any event, the switch should be located within easy reach in order to make it easier to activate the device in the event that it will be accidentally turned on. All electrical hair dryers should have an overload warning light on the control panel. If the overload warning light comes on, the user should disconnect the unit immediately and place it in a safe place, such as the basement.
If one of the speed settings for hair dryers becomes fast when the motor is on, this can be a sign of a power surge. As with all appliances, hair dryers should have a power cord that plugs into an appropriate outlet. If the cord is not attached to an outlet, the user should check the outlet to make sure that the cord is not damaged or frayed. It is a good idea to consult with an electrician who is familiar with electrical systems in order to determine what caused the surge. One possibility is that the outlet did not support the current usage, which resulted in the surge. Other possibilities are that the cord was damaged or warped, causing the hair dryer to use much more electricity than it is intended to.
Another thing to look for is overheating. Some newer hair dryer models include a built-in heat detector. Others are automatically controlled by a thermostat, but it is a good idea to read the manufacturer's instructions before purchasing a hair dryer with one of these features. A dryer that constantly gets too hot can cause damage to the motor or the heating element itself. A dryer that has low humidity levels or one that does not regulate its temperature could also cause overheating. It is important to purchase a hair dryer that uses a fan rather than a heating element for this reason.
