A hair dryer, sometimes called a hair gun, is an electrical appliance used to dry and style hair using a heated plate. It makes use of an electric fan to heat air over a heating element; as the heated air passes over the drying coil it warms. When the heated air enters wet hair, it lifts the water from the hair helping to condense it. This process prevents the hair from drying out and helps it become more manageable.
The three main types of hair dryers are the fixed style, the diffuser and the portable style. The fixed style is often thought of as the traditional hair dryer but it can now be found in many modern variations such as the ionic style or the mini hair dryer. The fixed hair dryer has a heat setting dial which allows you to regulate the temperature; you can even adjust the speed of the fan motor.
The fixed hair dryer has two settings: normal and super. In normal mode the airflow is balanced between straightening and drying; when the hair is being dried more air is directed to the curls. When using the super setting, more air is directed to the curls. The stronger magnets in the hair dryer allow for stronger airflow with less chance of the hair becoming damaged by knock-offs that may be floating around in the airflow. This type of hair dryer is great for curly hair and those with fine hair as it is less likely to damage their curls.
The third type of hair dryer is the cool shot button. This cool shot button activates the ionic dryer to emit negative ions which slow down the evaporation time of the hair; however it doesn't stop it from blowing out. The negative ions don't penetrate the strands but rather just attach to the hair shaft and then they are sucked into the machine. This cool shot button is best for someone who has thin hair as it doesn't blow out too much air, but rather creates a gentle vacuum which is great for creating curls and fine hair.
Some modern hair dryers also have auto shut off features. You can set the cool shot button so that it will automatically shut off when not in use. These types of hairdryers may also have a quick heat up feature where the hair dryer will detect when the hair strands are heated and the motor will shut the hair dryer off. This is an excellent feature to prevent accidental burning of your scalp.
These are the three most popular types of hair dryers today and they are all great for drying your hair and avoiding burning and damaging your hair's root. If you are unsure which type you should purchase, keep in mind that the best hair dryers will be the ones that allow for ample airflow but also provide for a cool shot button that is easy to access. Also take a look at the size of the cord and make sure that the length is long enough to get from one side of your head to the other without getting tangled up or snagged on anything.
